Overwhelmed by a fragmented and manual data collection process, ASM, a global pioneer in semiconductor manufacturing, needed to quickly modernize their  carbon and ESG data management to service reporting for frameworks like SBTi and CSRD.

The organization transitioned from spreadsheets and haphazard data collection to a centralized, audit-ready platform with Pulsora,  improving assurance processes, streamlining data governance, and building a scalable foundation for sustainability leadership.

What began as a search for a flexible solution has evolved into a trusted partnership, where Pulsora is helping ASM confidently navigate evolving regulations while future-proofing their sustainability operations.

The challenge: Replacing fragmented data collection with centralized compliance

With a March 2025 deadline looming, ASM needed more than ambition to comply with the first wave of CSRD compliance. They needed accuracy, auditability, and speed.

As a large, publicly traded company, they fell into the first wave of organizations required to submit a report as of this year, and CSRD compliance would only help raise the bar of their already-advancing sustainability efforts.

But pre-Pulsora, ASM was still managing their environmental data manually. Their Sustainability team was gathering information across dozens of facilities using Excel spreadsheets, miscellaneous files, and scattered emails — an approach that, while sophisticated in design, was fragmented in execution.

The result? Inconsistencies, errors, and critical data gaps. The process was vulnerable and not up to the standards of such a powerful name in the industry. For regulations like the CSRD, every data point matters. They needed a solution not just to meet compliance requirements, but to power a future-ready sustainability program that would allow them to ingest granular consumption data, automate accurate GHG emissions calculations, and build audit-ready reports with ease and confidence.

Why Pulsora? Flexibility, transparency, and true partnership

The ASM team started with a list of nearly 50 vendors. They evaluated vendors based on external ratings agencies, research and advisory firms, and other web input. From there, they continued to cut solutions that didn’t meet both the carbon and ESG feature criteria they needed  now and in the future.

“We had a list of different criteria that we thought were critical as part of our evaluation process,” shares Jeff Rudnik, ASM’s Director of Global Environmental Sustainability & Net Zero.

“We basically went down the list: Can they do GHG calculators Scope 1, 2, and 3? And how is the Scope 3 calculator compared to other offerings out there? How do they support ESG reporting, including CSRD? How’s their core architecture? Is it a solid platform inherently, or is it a mishmash of different things that have been thrown together like we’ve seen from other companies?”

Next, they met with and closely evaluated over 25 platforms, including UL360 and Watershed. But it was our flexibility, purpose-built architecture, and compatibility with mandatory and voluntary reporting frameworks that led ASM to select Pulsora.

“Flexibility, I think, was probably the number one criteria for all platforms because we knew that our company is changing, regulations are changing, the way things are going to need to be done will have to change – so flexibility is really the name of the game when we’re talking about platforms. Some of the other platforms we saw out there were very rigid. They weren’t able to be modified or be adaptable as things inside or outside a company change,” says Jeff.

Here’s where we won over both legacy solutions and other options on the market:

Flexibility at our core

ASM’s team knew that change — both internal and regulatory — would be a constant. Our flexible, configurable architecture is essential to their workflow, especially compared to legacy tools that felt outdated and rigid.

Built-in auditability

Unlike manual spreadsheets or piecemeal systems, Pulsora is able to offer ASM true transparency. With Pulsora, ASM is able to rely on audit logs as well as calendarized monthly insights to support both internal and external audit processes.

Every input: traceable. Every number: validated. Every metric: auditable.

Trust in Pulsora’s capabilities

ASM embraced the opportunity to work collaboratively with Pulsora’s Product and Customer teams. After coming to the table with a number of requirements, we were able to co-build together to develop the solutions they needed across both carbon and ESG.

Jeff and his Global Climate Environment team continue to have deep influence in the process, and Pulsora matches that rigor with agility and transparency.

How ASM uses Pulsora to streamline sustainability and carbon management

With Pulsora, ASM collects consumption and activity data, calculates Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, and manages and reports on decarbonization goals in a single system.

Pulsora’s Carbon Management product provides ASM with the tools to collect, review, export, and report on Scope 1, 2, and 3 data in a single system. More importantly, the outputs allow  their team to tell a better story enabled by Pulsora Analytics.

Because our Carbon module is natively integrated into our ESG solution, users like ASM can measure GHG as well as other sustainability KPIs to support their reporting efforts.

Centralized data collection

Leveraging Pulsora’s GHG data request functionality, ASM’s Global Sustainability Team can assign site-specific data owners automated input tasks and due dates on a repeating, quarterly basis, with each facility automatically accounting for whether certain data types are or are not applicable at each site.

With built-in tracking tools, they can monitor request status in real time, making it easier to consolidate data across dozens of locations and stay on schedule for regulatory reporting.

Approval workflows

To meet the CSRD’s strict data governance requirements, ASM implemented a structured approval workflow in Pulsora. Each data point, such as water consumption at a specific facility, is routed to a designated reviewer with the right domain knowledge.

Approvers receive tasks directly via email with a seamless entry point into the Pulsora platform to review, approve, or flag submissions. They can reject entries for revision and leave contextual comments, ensuring each transaction is verified and traceable before it’s used in reporting.

Pulsora’s workflows enable ASM to collect data directly from data owners.

Direct-from-source accuracy and evidence file management

Pulsora’s workflows enable ASM to collect data directly from data owners rather than from an email-based workflow, reducing errors and discrepancies. We’re able to seamlessly link evidence and explanation,  including supporting documentation like utility bills and written explanations alongside reported consumption data, to transactions when a user submits data so it’s always audit-ready and centrally stored.

Analytics and reporting

ASM utilizes Pulsora's Analytics modules to track facility-level performance over time, benchmark energy efficiency across sites, and flag potential opportunities for decarbonization.

The dashboards allow teams to filter data by business unit, geography, facility, or organizational structure, making it easy to access the insights they need. All visualizations and dashboards can be exported in PNG or Excel formats for use in internal presentations or to support audit workflows.

Impact on business: Huge wins in time, accuracy, and audit confidence

Since implementing Pulsora, ASM has achieved measurable improvements:

  • A 50% reduction in time spent on assurance processes

  • Significant increases in data accuracy across submitted data and data gaps
  • Broader contributor engagement: More facilities and data owners participate directly in reporting, allowing for broader global collaboration

  • Improved auditability and transparency: Every data point now has a clear, traceable origin and evidence file attached

  • Faster data rollups and drilldowns: Data is populated in real-time in their KPI catalog, so the ASM team has saved critical hours by not having to string together a data story

Rather than scrambling during audits, ASM now approaches regulatory deadlines with confidence.

“The amount of time spent on the assurance process related to environmental metrics was significantly decreased this year. It’s probably at least half the amount of time during assurance, and accuracy increased across the board,” Jeff says.

“We’re able to roll up those data points more quickly into the KPI catalog, and that was previously a very manual process. We’re saving a significant number of hours each quarter and each half year putting together the data story, the graphs, the metrics, the percentages of reduction or increases.”

Looking ahead: Building for an automated, value-led future

With CSRD reporting underway, ASM is already looking toward the next evolution of its sustainability operations.

They hope to continue expanding their automation and integration capabilities by reducing manual interventions even further to save time and increase data reliability.

They’re also keen on exploring new product innovations to drive smarter, faster reporting with additional decarbonization tools and assets like PulsoraAI. Most importantly, they hope to continue to deepen the collaboration between Pulsora and their internal teams to maximize time savings and value adds for the organization.
